We're adamant that bookselling isn't just sitting around and reading, but somehow we do still manage to get through a lot of pages each month! Here's what we've read in April and why we're excited about them...
Things Bright and Beautiful by Anbara Salam
Something's not right in the jungle...
Missionaries Max and Bea are struggling on Advent Island. There's the heat, the relentless rainy season, the rat droppings in their sack of rice, and then the sudden reappearance of their predecessor, whistling and hanging her drying underwear all over Mission House. As Bea begins to take more to the island and successfully tend to her garden, something different starts to happen to Max.
From a Low and Quiet Sea by Donal Ryan
The refugee. The dreamer. The penitent.
Spanning continents and generations, three men's lives are intricately tied together in ways they cannot know in this unpredictable and heartbreakingly beautiful novel. Farouk plans to leave Syria by boat with his wife and child. Lampy struggles to concentrate on his job while he comes to terms with his recent break up. John tries to make sense of the terrible things he's done in his lifetime as he nears his end.
Circe by Madeline Miller
The goddess who walks with lions and wolves.
Surely everyone who read Song of Achilles loved it, and after a long old wait Madeline Miller has finally gifted us another treasure in Circe. Cast into the shadow by her father, the sun Titan Helios, Circe grows up feeling ordinary until a broken heart forces her to cast two spells that will changer her life, and cast her into exile. Her encounters span generations but it's all too easy to sail through this novel in the certain hands of an expert story-teller.
